| Chess for Beginners |
| |
| This class is open to anyone interested in chess! You will find this class to be fun & educational! You will learn all the basics of chess: defining the board & pieces, history, how to read and write chess, movement, basic strategy, openings, draws, checkmating, and more!! Studies show that children who learn to play chess early will not only do better in math, cognitive & analytical abilities, but they are more inclined to develop leadership qualities. Why? Because they learn to think strategically.
Note: Students need to bring a chess set to classes (Staunton / standard style set). Notebook & pen / pencil needed by ages 11 & above. |

| Instructor Bio: |
| Hi families, my name is Christine Bridges, I am excited to teach and play chess with the students at Palaestra. As a kid, my parents ran the chess clubs for my siblings and I from Kindergarten through my senior year of high school. My first tournament I played in was in kindergarten. As an elementary team we won first in the state two years in a row and placed every year. During my middle school and high school years we traveled around the country playing in the national tournaments. As an adult, I play online and have helped teach friends and family. Chess develops strategizing skills that are beneficial for life! I am excited to help grow these skills and also implement the fun of chess. This is my third year at Palaestra with my two girls, Eva and Emma. |
