  Starting Out in Latin

Over half of the English words we use on a daily basis come from Latin. Not only is Latin considered the mother of French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian, it is the language of law, theology and the modern sciences. Latin will improve student vocabulary and understanding of English grammar and studies have shown that Latin students score considerably higher on standardized college entrance tests. While these are excellent reasons for studying Latin they are not the most important - Latin students will learn how their brain learns - they will learn what it takes to succeed  in a challenging endeavor - they will learn how to study! A college Latin professor once said, If you  can get an A in Latin you can get an A in anything.

Please purchase a copy of, Minimus-Starting Out in Latin. Students should be prepared to come to the first day of class with the text, a notebook, 3x5 notecards and a pencil.

  Instructor: Walterich, Mary Ellen
  Instructor Bio:
Mary Ellen has been involved with Palaestra since before it was Palaestra - some 27 years! She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University in the lost art of Journalism. BK (before kids) she edited several newspapers, published her own newspaper, wrote a weekly newspaper column and won a Michigan Press Association award. She homeschooled both of her children, Michael and Alisa and rarely misses the "teachable moment" when she’s with grandkids Brooke and Alexander. Despite having been President of the prestigious Trenton High School Latin Club, Mary Ellen always regretted not having paid more attention to high school Latin. So when her daughter headed off to Calvin College she headed to Wayne State where she not only learned introductory Latin but she learned how to study, a skill she feels had she had before going to college would have changed her entire college experience. Now, when not monitoring the grammar disaster that is Facebook, she enjoys bringing the study of Latin and its many benefits to homeschooled students.
