Class Information

  Jr. High Literature and Writing

~~In this class the students will read several books from a variety of genres each semester, learn to identify literary devices the authors use, discuss the deep issues raised in the stories, and write several short creative and analysis papers in response to their reading.  I believe that through reading both fiction and non-fiction my students can begin to ponder the depth of life and death, examine human nature, and venture a godly response.  As a professional ESL grammar and writing teacher, I also appreciate the finer aspects of vocabulary use and writing styles that both the published authors and the students are able to develop in their writing.  This class will require about 50-70 pages of reading a week, weekly written responses to the reading, and a 2-page paper once a month. Parents will be expected to facilitate writing and some discussion at home.  Grades will be given.  The book list will be available in August.

  Instructor: Kannapell, Lisa
  Instructor Bio:
Lisa Kannapell has been teaching in some fashion or form for twenty years now. Homeschooling her three children has been her main profession for the past twelve years. As if that werent enough, she has also been teaching English to immigrants at various colleges, teaching elementary French, teaching from the Bible at church, and for the past 3 years, teaching junior high and high school literature and writing at Palaestra. She loves reading, writing and history more than either cooking or shopping. For what its worth, she studied Comparative Literature and Russian at Cornell University and received a masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Michigan State. Her husband, Rev. Allen Kannapell, also has a love for literature and writing, having majored in English at the The University (of Virginia, for us northerners), and received a Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. He has been pastoring in the Episcopal and Anglican churches for the past twenty years, as well as reading tons of theology and Tolkien. He and his wife teach the high school literature class at Palaestra with high expectations for the students to learn how to think, analyze and express their ideas clearly in writing, all the while discovering truths about humanity and God.
