Class Information

Story of the World: The Modern Age. 5th-9th

~~This is a world history and geography class based on The Story of the World: Volume 4, The Modern Age; by Susan Wise Bauer. It is intended for 6th through 8th grade, although younger and older students are also welcome.

What really caused the American Civil War? Why isn’t Canada part of the United States? How did a potato disease change the history of Ireland? Why do we have different time zones? Why were two newspapermen, named Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer so glad to see a war get started? Why would anyone want to be a communist? How many countries does it take to be a World War? What is a cold war?

There will be homework EVERY WEEK. This will include reading a chapter prior to class and being prepared to participate in lively discussions. Students will be taught how to use outlining as a method to understand and to study history. After students understand the process of outlining, this will be part of the homework assignment. (This will be done instead of weekly tests.) Map work will be done as homework and graded in class. Everyone will maintain a timeline in their notebook and this will also be reviewed in class. Occasionally, there will be games, crafts, experiments and special guests to enhance students’ understanding of the lesson.

Students will have two projects (one in the fall and one in the spring) that they will present to the class and will be shown at Palaestra’s Open House. There will be a Final Review at the end of the school year, covering all the material that has been studied.

This is a yearlong class, you will be automatically be re-enrolled in the winter semester. The class fee includes the cost of the book, the student pages (workbook) and binder.
