  Middle School Writing

This writing class will seek to eliminate the drudgery of writing through the implementation of assignments that are relative and contemporary. Using "Writing for 100 Days" and "Easy Grammar: Grade 6", students will be given practical and relative writing assignments which incorporate various grammar topics and problematic words in our English language.

Each week we will cover tricky, confusing, frequently abused/misused or difficult-to-remember aspects of English grammar and spelling. (i.e. homophones and homographs) Following the lesson, students will implement what they have learned in a writing assignment. Because we meet once a week, students will have writing homework assignments. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE HAND WRITTEN.

This class will read books from a variety of acclaimed authors. Through class discussions, small group discussions and games the students will learn how to employ different literary techniques. The students will learn how to create outlines, story sequence charts, form a five paragraph essay and prepare for high school writing. The goal of this class is for the students to be able to read and understand the material, then be able to write about what they have learned.

Students will need: a looseleaf binder (no spiral notebooks please), looseleaf paper,#2 pencils, a sturdy folder. In the end they will have a writing portfolio. I will be encouraging students to enter writing contests for the experience, practice and fun.
