  Monster Literature

~~We will explore and discuss the role monstrous characters have played in literature throughout the ages of written history.   From the Jewish prophets, to one of the oldest sagas written in English, to the science fiction of the 20th century, man has always been fascinated with the enemy and the struggle between good and evil both within and outside of oneself.   We will read and discuss these topics in depth with books which may include:  Beowulf, Grendel, Freddie’s Book, Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde, The Invisible Man, The Books of Revelation and Daniel from the Bible.   Students will be expected to read up to 200 pages of challenging literature a week and to participate in class discussions.  Short weekly comprehension assignments, 2 longer essays, and an exam will be given and graded to develop students’ ability to respond to literature in writing.  The longer writing assignments in this class will overlap with the assignments given in the High School Writing class which could (and is strongly suggested to) be taken simultaneously.

  Instructor: Kannapell, Lisa
  Instructor Bio:
Lisa Kannapell has been teaching in some fashion or form for twenty years now. Homeschooling her three children has been her main profession for the past twelve years. As if that werent enough, she has also been teaching English to immigrants at various colleges, teaching elementary French, teaching from the Bible at church, and for the past 3 years, teaching junior high and high school literature and writing at Palaestra. She loves reading, writing and history more than either cooking or shopping. For what its worth, she studied Comparative Literature and Russian at Cornell University and received a masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Michigan State. Her husband, Rev. Allen Kannapell, also has a love for literature and writing, having majored in English at the The University (of Virginia, for us northerners), and received a Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. He has been pastoring in the Episcopal and Anglican churches for the past twenty years, as well as reading tons of theology and Tolkien. He and his wife teach the high school literature class at Palaestra with high expectations for the students to learn how to think, analyze and express their ideas clearly in writing, all the while discovering truths about humanity and God.
