  Literature and Writing

From far away countries, to the United States of America, from biographies to fairy tales, join us as we explore a world of literature. In this class, students will read from award winning authors and learn writing skills based from the IEW curriculum. The students will learn what the different parts of a story are, how to analyze literature, make character and story maps and more. Students will be required to bring a pen/pencil and paper to class, take notes, take part in class discussions, read assigned books and to write papers.

  Instructor: Kannapell, Lisa
  Instructor Bio:
Lisa Kannapell has been teaching in some fashion or form for twenty years now. Homeschooling her three children has been her main profession for the past twelve years. As if that werent enough, she has also been teaching English to immigrants at various colleges, teaching elementary French, teaching from the Bible at church, and for the past 3 years, teaching junior high and high school literature and writing at Palaestra. She loves reading, writing and history more than either cooking or shopping. For what its worth, she studied Comparative Literature and Russian at Cornell University and received a masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Michigan State. Her husband, Rev. Allen Kannapell, also has a love for literature and writing, having majored in English at the The University (of Virginia, for us northerners), and received a Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. He has been pastoring in the Episcopal and Anglican churches for the past twenty years, as well as reading tons of theology and Tolkien. He and his wife teach the high school literature class at Palaestra with high expectations for the students to learn how to think, analyze and express their ideas clearly in writing, all the while discovering truths about humanity and God.
