Class Information

Odyssey of the Mind/ age 9-11

Please note: Your child must be no older than 11 by May 1st, 2018.  The age parameters are set by the oranization, we do not have flexibility.

WELCOME TO ODYSSEY OF THE MIND!

Will we travel through time?  Build a robot?  Develop an art program for autistic children?  Build a balsa structure that will hold an elephant?  Perform an original story – written by you?  Who knows!

We will learn how to work on a team, develop and maintain a schedule, brainstorm, practice reverse engineering, develop a cost sheet and plan, design, build, and trouble-shoot a project.

This is an international program with regional competition starting in February.  Therefore, this is a YEAR-LONG (2 semester) commitment.  We will follow the rules for competition.  Whether we compete, will be up to the families of the students that take the class.  100% of the class must agree to compete or we will NOT compete.

Please consider these commitments seriously when signing up.

  Instructor Bio:
My name is Lisa Hoshaw. 2016-2017 was my first year homeschooling and I have LOVED it! I have a degree in Construction Engineering and Management with a specialty in Mechanical Engineering. I have facilitated project planning meetings for Eli Lilly, Indiana University and the University of Michigan. Based on these experiences, I hope to share life skills such as teamwork, logical thinking, planning and implementation with this class. I have been at home with my children since they were born. My oldest is starting high school in 2017, and my middle son is in the middle of middle school. Max, my third grader, is my only homeschooler. My husband, Steve, and I have coached Lego Robotics 1st through 8th grade. I am familiar with student preparation for these kind of competitions and have experienced many different team situations at every age group. I enjoy scrapbooking, renovations and space planning, and snuggling under a big comforter while drinking hot chocolate and watching bad movies.
