~~This class will empower the youth to communicate, speak, increase self-awareness and promote self-esteem through writing. Natasha “Beautiful Thought” Sansom is a speaker, spoken soul poet, and winner of the National Poetry Award in 2012, Christian Poet of the Year. Ms. Sansom will teach the participating youth 10 forms of poetry that incorporates actual writing sessions corresponding to the learned forms of poetry. They will even learn which books of the Bible are considered Poetry. A variety of creative techniques will be used to engage the youth in learning and practicing skills needed for writing.
As the class develops rapport and increases trust, the participants will increasingly be lead toward greater self-discovery and increased self-esteem. An old man cried sharing a poem in one of Ms. Sansom’s 2 hr workshops; the eventual transparency is amazing. The individuals will be empowered through the listening and appreciation as a group of their words and stories. Voices will return to the silent which work to help them live more authentically and increase their creativity, self-esteem, and writing (language arts) skills.
The youth will formally present at least two of their writings in front of the group (oral and creative art form). Family, friends, partners, and other staff will be invited to a final presentation. The final session will include poetry shared by both the instructor and the class participants.
