  Discover America

Go back in time to the days of Christopher Columbus and the great explorers who helped settle North America! This two semester course uses maps, crafts, timelines, and games to create “History Pockets” for students to collect information about this amazing time in history. Beginning with Christopher Columbus, Discover America! is a class that will cover the famous explorers of the 1500s all the way to the days of settling the Western Frontier in the 1800s.


Materials Fee: $15 per student per semester




  Instructor: Schmidt, Maribeth
  Instructor Bio:
  Mrs. Maribeth Schmidt has been homeschooling her three children for twelve years and has taught Marvelous Michigan, Nifty Fifty and Camera Club at Palaestra over the past four years. Married to her high school sweetheart, Jim, for 22 years, Maribeth attends North Ridge Church in Plymouth and is actively involved in children’s ministry every weekend. The University of Michigan – Dearborn is her alma mater with a B.A. in Music with a minor in English Literature. Upon completing her studies in 1992, Maribeth was hired as a portrait photographer for a national portrait studio chain. Her new career led her to work for commercial photographers in Detroit and Seattle until she was blessed to become a mother in 1998. Photography, music, history, politics, and children’s ministry are her passions in addition to educating her children. She loves teaching at Palaestra and has enjoyed getting to know all her students throughout the years.
